The other day I received a copy of Matthew W. Bates’ The Birth of the Trinity: Jesus, God, and Spirit New Testament & Early Christian Interpretations of the Old Testament from Oxford University Press. I’m really looking forward to this. All too often we skip the Old Testament and move right along to the New Testament and post-NT Christian literature in discussions about the Trinity without taking time to reflect on the fact that the NT and post-NT literature drew heavily from the OT in their trinitarian formulations. Hopefully Bates will highlight this practice throughout this volume. I’ll let you know if he does in due course.
