On Public Speaking

If you plan to speak publicly then please, by all means, speak! Don’t read aloud! There is a difference. Public speakers should make eye contact (or at least feign eye contact) with their audience. They should move around a little bit. They should speak naturally. There’s nothing worse than sitting through a lecture, or sermon, or speech in which the speaker has their eyes glued to a piece of paper or a monitor of some sort. Back when I used to make music I’d never step into the booth to record a verse if I didn’t have it memorized. Why? Because you can tell when someone’s reading and it never sounds as good. So please, again, I implore you by the mercies of God, if you’re going to speak publicly, then speak! Do. Not. Read. Aloud.
