Generic Messages

Do you find generic messages helpful?  By ‘generic’ I mean messages that can apply to everyone all the time.  I also mean messages that are rather obvious.  E.g., “you need to come up higher” or some variation thereof.  Is it really news that we need to progress or grow in the faith?  Is there anyone who’s gone so high that they can go no higher?  I don’t know, they just don’t seem very effective to me.  What do you think?

  1. It depends. I’m generally skeptical of them and see them similar to the fortune teller or horoscope that says vague things hoping something sticks.

However on the other hand if coming from the pulpit or addressed to the congregation from a prophet it could me more like a buckshot meant to hit everyone instead of a laser meant to hit only a few. It then speaks to them however the Holy Spirit chooses to. Even though it may be some general like ‘you need to come higher’, everone is going to hear that according to their own context and circumstances in their life.

I think the more important question is whether God does in fact speak in general messages and whether the preacher or prophet is in fact speaking a word from God. If so then it will accomplish its purposes and if not then it will be pretty useless.
