יום הולדת שמח יוחנן הוֹבּבִּנס
For those who don’t know, John Hobbins of Ancient Hebrew Poetry is 50 years old today. This is my feeble attempt at wishing him a Happy Birthday in Hebrew! I have no idea whether or not I should have used a samekh (as I did) or a sin to transliterate the ‘s’ in Hobbins. I also struggled with using chireq or the chireq yod for the ‘i’ and ultimately went with the chireq because in my mind the yod looked out of place. The ‘o’ gave me fits as well but I decided that the cholem vav was my best bet (don’t ask me why). I don’t know that there is an absolutely correct way to transliterate ‘Hobbins’ into Hebrew, but I’m sure there’s a better way than I have done. If one were to pronounce this it would say ‘Hō-beans’
In any event, Happy Birthday John Hō-beans! Thanks for all that you do in getting us to think with your educational and provocative posts!
