Emery De Gaál opens his The Theology of Pope Benedict XVI: The Christocentric Shift saying:
It is a commonly held opinion that Joseph Ratzinger’s theological contributions are essentially ecclesiological in nature. While it is true that he dedicated his dissertation and Habilitationsschrift (habilitation, that is, his postdoctoral thesis) to ecclesiological themes, the inner motivation and fulcrum of his theology is supremely Christological. His concern is not primarily an academic or cerebral one but is rather the result of a personal encounter with Jesus Christ as a believer living the sacramental life of the Catholic Church. (p. 1)
