Vanhoozer at Wheaton

I just received an email from a credible source at Wheaton informing me that Dr. Kevin Vanhoozer will join Wheaton College for the fall semester as Blanchard Professor of Theology.  I’ve not read Vanhoozer myself, but he’s in the footnotes to about a hundred books that I have read so he must be saying something worth taking note of.

  1. If nothing else pick up a copy of The drama of doctrine: a canonical-linguistic approach to Christian theology…wow!

Also try his Theological Interpretation of the Old Testament: A Book-by-Book Survey

  2. interesting.

  3. I suppose I should note that I mean his essay in Theological Interpretation of the Old Testament! :-)

  4. Richard: Thanks for the recommendations. Pretty much everyone tells me to get The Drama of Doctrine.

  5. “Theology is faith seeking understanding, but understanding is more than theoretical. If we really grasp who and where we are as disciples, we should know how to live out our faith. All too often, however, the church professes its faith but is unsure how to practice it. Even some of my seminary students come to theology classes somewhat reluctantly, assuming that doctrine is neither practical nor relevant to their future ministry.

To define doctrine as direction for fitting participation in the drama of redemption – in what God is doing in Christ through the Spirit to form the church and renew creation – is to ensure that the understanding that faith seeks will not stop short of practice. My goal as a theologian is to move beyond the acquisition of knowledge to its application in real life: in a word, I want to get wisdom.”

  6. Jeff: Nice quote. Where’s it from?

  7. Sorry, I can’t remember where I found it. It’s from my blog is the best answer I can give you.

  8. Jeff: Good enough since I don’t have any of his books to look it up in anyway.

  9. [...] beginning with Fall 2009 as Blanchard Professor of Theology (the title of his position comes from Nick Norelli ’s account). Does anyone know more about this? Can anyone [...]
