Bryan L. recently said in a comment on his blog:
I meant normal American without a strong accent like you find on the East Coast, or in the rural South or the Midwest or ghetto.
Funnily enough, Central Jersey (where I’m from) is one of the few places on the East Coast where there is no accent. When you watch television shows and hear people talking with ‘normal’ accents, they all sound like us. ;) But seriously, when you start moving up to North Jersey then you’ll encounter the guys who say “Nowrk” instead of “New-erk” (= Newark); it’s somewhat of a New Yorkish accent, akin to what you’ll hear on Statin Island or Long Island (which each have their own peculiarities) but a little less pronounced.
But when you go into New York State you’ll hear all kinds of accents, even some country! Travel further North and you’ll come across the most distinctive East Coast accent there is, which is that of New England (MA, RI, VT, NH). You know it well, they all “Pahk” they’re “Cahs” in the “Yahd.”
As you travel to South Jersey (e.g., Camden county) you’ll start to encounter the Phillyesque accent where ‘oo’ sounds take on a y sound. For example, I’ve heard guys in Camden and Philly talk about what they “dyou” (i.e. do). This is even more pronounced in Maryland, especially Baltimore. And of course the further South you travel the more country the accent, except in the big cities in Florida like Orland or Miami. In Miami almost everybody (who isn’t a plant from NY or NJ) has a Cuban twang to their accent (even if they aren’t Cuban). In Orlando there’s so many people from up North that you’d think you were still in NY or NJ.
Just thought I’d clear that up. I’m sure that Drew can vouch for much of what I’ve said since he’s been up and down the East Coast probably more than I have.

Yeah right. Y’all all sound funny to me! : )
So you’re saying you don’t have an accent?

Bryan: We only sound funny to you because you have an accent. And yes, folks from Central NJ have no accents whatsoever! We’re the normal standard by which all accents are judged. ;)

I don’t have an accent unless I get around my brother or people I grew up with. Then I sound a little South Side. : )

I’m slightly bewildered—I was told tonight by someone that I had a bit of an east coast accent, which came as a surprise. When people talk on TV, they sound completely normal to me. Anyway, I’m from Maryland, but I do *not* sound a thing like people in Baltimore. Nor do I pronounce “do” with a Y sound stuck in it. Is there some other kind of Maryland accent?
I would be inclined to say my friend is just mistaken, except that she thinks a different friend who’s also from Maryland sounds very similar…
