Ordered a Bunch of Books Last Night

I broke down and ordered a bunch of books last night.  Here’s what I got:

Heresies: Heresy and Orthodoxy in the History of the Church — Harold O. J. Brown

Aspects of Rabbinic Theology: Major Concepts of the Talmud – Solomon Schechter

Invitation to Dogmatic Theology: A Canonical Approach – Paul C. McGlasson

Biblical Theology: A Proposal – Brevard S. Childs

Meet the Rabbis: Rabbinic Thought and the Teachings of Jesus – Brad H. Young

Unfolding the Deuteronomistic History: Origins, Upgrades, Present Text – Mark A. O’Brien

Can’t wait!

  1. I am interested to hear about the Brevard Childs book.

  2. Nick, I particularly find those by Schechter and Young inviting.

  3. Will: I’m interested to read it.

TC: Someone recommended Schechter’s book to me a few years back and I’ve had it on my wish list for a long time, so I finally said it’s time to pull the trigger.

  4. Young used to be one of my professors. He was one of Flusser’s students–in fact, Flusser wanted Young to take over for him at Hebrew University.

Here you’ll get a very different view of rabbinic literature from what you’ll get from Neusner (and that’s a good thing, by the way).

  5. John: Good to know, thanks. I’ve also got my eyes on a couple of other Young books (Paul the Jewish Theologian & Jesus the Jewish Theologian).

  6. The Paul C. McGlasson looks kind of interesting.

I saw Child’s “Biblical Theology of the Old and New Testaments” at Half Price Books the other day and almost got it when I noticed some highlighting in it.

Getting more into Rabbinic studies lately?

Did you get any of these used or for cheap?

  7. As I noted in my Necrology 2007, Harold O. J. Brown’s Heresies was nothing short of a turning point in my intellectual history. I do hope you enjoy it!

Also, I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts on McGlasson.

  8. Bryan: Yeah, Richard’s comment on TC’s blog reminded me that I needed to get back into Rabbinic literature. Plus I’ve had my eye on this book for a long time. The Brad Young book has also been in my shopping cart for a while as well. And I got them all pretty cheap.

Esteban: Yes, I seem to remember that. I’m sure that I’ll love it since I’m a budding heresiologist. ;) And I’ll be very interested to share my thoughts on McGlasson with you. :)

  9. I’m curious to hear what you think of Meet the Rabbis: Rabbinic Thought and the Teachings of Jesus. It sounds kind of intriguing.

  10. Shaun: I’ll be sure to blog some of my thoughts on it.
