Bible Answer Man

Here’s a scary thought: Amongst my group of friends, I’m the one they turn to for answers to their Bible questions.

Last night I had a guy call me up and ask if I thought that it was possible that because people lived to be 800-900 years old back in the pre-flood days, if they could have developed differently over time to look like neanderthals.  My response: “I don’t think people ever actually lived to be that old, but I see plenty of people walking around now-a-days that look like neanderthals.”

Then some questions about evolution came up and the age of the Earth.  I don’t think that the Bible addresses either, but this was basically my response to that: “When my car breaks down, I don’t take it to the dentist; I take it to a mechanic because he’s the one who knows about cars.  So when we’re asking science questions, we probably shouldn’t ask theologians or Bible scholars, it might be a good idea to ask scientists.”  Doesn’t mean the scientists are right, but at least they’re informed.

At least he didn’t start talking about astrology.

why don’t you think people ever lived that long?

Roger: The simple answer is because I don’t read Genesis in a woodenly literal way.

what other way is there to read it?

Roger: In the way that allows allegory to be allegory, metaphor be metaphor, hyperbole be hyperbole, history be history, so on and so forth.
