Go Speed Racer, Go!!!

A couple of months ago I said that you have to be mentally deficient to pay money to go see Speed Racer because the previews looked so horrible.  Well, my daughter has been begging me all week to take her, and as anyone who has daughters knows, they can cause mental deficiency in their fathers.  Anyway, we went, and I loved it!  Sure, the CG was over the top, but not because they were trying too hard; it was over the top because that’s exactly the effect they were going for.  Surprisingly, this film captured the spirit of the original cartoon, which is all that anyone can really ask for.  So if you have kids or are a fan of the cartoon series, go check it out.  Just a warning though: they were pretty liberal with the a** word and I even caught a s**t in there as well.  Shocking for a PG rated movie.

Well, nowadays who will actually go see a “G” rated film?

As for what you can say or do under a specific rating, that’s always a bit flexible. They generally allow one use of some form of “procreating” under PG-13, as long as the use is non-sexual. Thus, as popular as PG-13 is these days, directors will often “choose” which actor’s “procreate!” to actually use in the final cut.

Amazing the useless trivia you can learn watching DVDs with the commentary track on….

Anyway, a lot of people suspect the main audience for “Speed Racer” is going to be older geeks, not kids, so the studio proably pitched the film a bit older than you’d have expected.

Chuck: Those of us with kids who beg us to go see a G rated film, that’s who. ;)

And both my daughter and I enjoyed the movie, so it hit on different generational levels.

And you saw it premiere day! The studio thanks you!!

It may be out on DVD soon if you believe the speculation here and here.

_Redbelt_ sounds like the official DVD could hit streets before the bootleggers get geared up.

Chuck: My father told me that it got a half-star review. Trust me, I didn’t think I would like it, in fact I went in wanting to hate it, but alas, it won me over.

The movie still could have been PG without the profanity. But I only counted 4 uses of “*ss” and one “d*mn.” The thing that disappointed me the most was when Spritle gave Royalton the bird. That was completely unnecessary and inappropriate for what’s being billed as a kid-friendly film. But I loved the rest of it. I thought it largely captured the over-the-top cartoonishness of the original series.

Chris: I agree completely. In fact, I remember looking down at my daughter when Spritle gave the finger, and I just shook my head no.
