R.I.P., R. Laird Harris

Justin Taylor announced the death of Old Testament scholar R. Laird Harris last friday.  My condolences to his friends and family.  May the Lord comfort them in their time of loss.

I have made much use of his Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament over the last few years, and as I approach my upcoming Hebrew studies, I’m sure I will be using it a lot more.  He will be missed.

He will be missed. He was 97 years old, that is a long life, I only hope to live that long. He was also chairman of the Committee on Bible Translation which produced the New International Version (NIV).

My condolences also go out to his family and friends.

Another wise old head gone.

Let us pray God will send us at least another wise servant to replace him. Or more, if we’re lucky.

Robert: That’s a bit too old for my taste. I want to go out at like 75 or 80, but I guess it’s not really up to me. And yes, I should have noted his involvement with the NIV, thanks for pointing that out.

Chuck: Amen.

I first met Dr. Harris in a class he was teaching at Wheaton College. He was commuting from Covenant to Wheaton to do this. He talked me into doing my graduate work at Dropsie and years later he nominated me for membership on the NIV committe where I have served since 1968. He was a scholar and a gentleman.

Larry: Thanks for the anecdote. And thank you for your service in working on the NIV; I have benefited greatly from that translation.
