I’m sorry, but I don’t follow

I went to my friend’s Church this morning since it’s his last Sunday in his present building, and I decided to bring along my Reader’s Hebrew Bible.  Well, to my great disappointment, I wasn’t able to follow along at all.  It might have had something to do with him preaching from the New Testament, but I think that I’ve learned to never go to Church without my trusty KJV. ;)

you ain’t right.

Better luck next time. : )

Jim: Ha! :-P

Shaun: Thanks! :-P BTW, I’m looking forward to your review. I’m interested to see how people with varying levels of Hebrew like this volume.

You probably know this, but I’ll say it anyway,

unless you are really good, really good (like Jim) it can be hard to follow along mainly because the word order in the Greek and Hebrew Bibles are vastly different than in the English - whereas word order is not too important in the Greek - in English it is - so while English is a SVO language [Subj, Verb, Object], Greek is not. Reading a Greek Bible takes a lot of practice in identifying these things and also keeping up with a Bible teacher/preacher.

I’ve given up on free books

Brian: When I bring my Greek-English NT to Church, I don’t really have too much trouble following along (even when I come across a word I’m not familiar with I can figure it out fairly quickly). But I think Greek is a lot closer to English than Hebrew, and I definitely have more Greek vocab memorized than Hebrew.

As for the books, don’t give up. You never know when something’s going to show up in the mail.

Try switching to WordPress Brian. They look more professional and a publisher may be more likely to think it’s worthwhile to send you books. It’s a weird thought but you never know. I like the way WordPress looks more than blogspot and I think it makes a blogger look a lot more serious instead of like some random guy who blogs. Again weird but that’s the kind of stuff I think about : )

Bryan

Bryan: I was actually going to suggest that. Not only do WP blogs look better, but they encourage commenting more than Blogger blogs (because of the ease of commenting and the interconnectivity between WP blogs). Comments might not be that important to some bloggers, but they let publishers know that you have an audience, and the bottom line for them is that they want to get their product noticed by as many people as possible.

Brian: Apart from switching to WP, I’d suggest contacting publishers that openly solicit requests, like Crossway, IVP, and Fortress Press. Also, with you in particular, there might be a problem with your address. I know that when I sent the Stott book it was returned (btw, I will get it back out to you, thanks for your patience). Just a couple things to consider.

Well, the best way to send me free stuff is either by US Priority Mail or UPS.

I tried seeing if I could switch over to WP and opened an account but when I tried to import my blogroll it crashed and I didn’t have the time to redo the list so I’ve put it off - but we are thinking of perhaps using WP to build our church website (like this one: http://www.thenewlifeproject.com). Then one of the pages would be our blog.

Brian: That may be the best way to get it quick, but time isn’t really the problem, the problem is the actual mailing address. No matter how the package is shipped it has to go to the desired destination. And in all likelihood, the publishers listed above are going to ship media mail (they have with me).

Yeah, I understand the problem - the problem is many places will not send stuff to PO Boxes which is all we have here (everyone here does). The only other option is UPS or DHL or FedEX directly to our house. Ah well.

Brian: Out of curiosity, why does everyone have PO boxes? Can’t you request a mailbox for the house?

Nick, once again your prophetic insight has failed you :-(

Yeah I switched over from blogger to wordpress because wordpress is much, much better. I had no traffic to my site when I was at blogger (partly my fault), but since switching over to wordpress I have had much more activity and they offer better options and templates.

Robert: Very true. When I was had a blogspot blog, I had one lone reader (besides myself). Since moving to WordPress I have at least like 15 or 20. ;) But seriously, I agree with everything you just said, and yes, to my dismay, the prophetic has not been manifesting in me the way it should be. Pray that I be delivered of this non-prophetic demon! :-P

I switched…

Nick, regarding mail boxes, no, we are at the mercies of the National Park Service and Xanterra (main employer of the lodges and facilities) and the Post office only works with the PO Boxes. UPS or FedEx or DHL can come directly to the house.

Brian: Weird. :?
