The Trinity in Bible Translation

This morning Eddie Arthur of  Kouya Chronicle fame, emailed me a copy of his MTh thesis entitled “Towards a Trinitarian Theology of Bible Translation”.  I just began reading it, but this part in the summary stood out immediately:

The Father reaches out to all of humanity seeking to draw mankind into one family under his fatherhood. This family while united continues to reflect the range of human cultures and languages each of which provides both new insights into the divine nature and unique ways of praising God.

Reflection on the incarnation of the Son, the divine ‘translation’ into human form, offers insights into the way in which the Gospel is translated into different human languages and cultures. This gives life to authentic, indigenous communities living the Gospel according to the norms of their culture and breathing new life into the culture.

The Spirit as the initiator and validator of God’s mission both prepares communities to receive the translated Gospel and empowers them to grow and develop beyond the expectations and restrictions of the missionary messengers.

I especially like the second point and Eddie’s clever use of the word ‘translation.’  I am looking forward to reading through this over the weekend.  Thanks Eddie!

BTW, Eddie has a video of some teaching he did on the Trinity earlier this month.  Do give it a look.

Nick,

Former Oneness Pentecostal here. I really enjoy your blog and wanted you to consider participating in a blogosphere debate with a young Oneness scholar named Jason Dulle (URL: http://theosophical.blogspot.com).

I am contacting him as well and would be willing to host in on my blog (brianleport.com) as well as promote it on as many blogs as possible as a means of getting flow to each of your blogs. Let me know if you are interested. My contact information should be available through this comment.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the proposal. At the moment I’m not interested in devoting the time necessary for a formal debate with Dulle. I’m vaguely familiar with him from some articles that he had written on Apostolic.net a while back, and some comments he left on the Parchment and Pen blog a couple of months ago, and I know that he’s a sharp guy and would make a worthy opponent, which is why I wouldn’t want to enter into something like this lightly. I don’t know if you’ve been keeping up with the recent comments on my blog, but I’ve been going back and forth with a few Oneness believers recently, and honestly I’m drained at the moment. But this is definitely something that I will keep in mind and might be interested in doing at a later date in time (perhaps in the summer). Thanks for thinking of me. And yes, I forgive you for not declaring me the winner of your caption contest. ;-)

God bless!

Nick

Nick, this thesis looks quite intriguing! I do hope to hear much about it from you.

Esteban: You know me, if it’s Trinitarian, I’ll blog about it! ;)
