Sorry, But That Ain’t Rough

Jim West just pointed us to another example of total depravity, this time a nanny who was fired after being caught on tape allegedly treating a couple’s infant twins roughly.  Well, I watched the video and I’m sorry, but that ain’t rough.

  1. One of the babies rolled off of the nanny’s lap right next to her on the couch, in between the nanny and the arm of the couch.  Big deal.
  2. She picks the babies up by their onesies.  OK?  So who doesn’t do that?  That’s one of the joys of having babies, they’re little and you can pick them up by their clothes.
  3. She leaves the babies on the couch while she goes in the kitchen.  Again, what’s the big deal?  I used to leave my daughter on the couch, on the recliner, and on the rocking chair (one of those big cushy ones, not a wooden one), and she was no worse for the wear.  Sure, one of the babies fell forward, but they didn’t fall off of the couch.
  4. And perhaps what could be considered the worst part of the video was the nanny holding one of the infants on her lap by their foot.  Again, how is that rough?  She wasn’t swining the kid by the foot, she wasn’t there for an extended period of time.

You’d think the way Jim talked about it that the nanny would have been caught beating the babies.  The worst thing I saw was the apparent nose-picking while she held the infant upside down on her lap by the foot.  But this was not abuse, it was not rough, and it was not totally depraved.  It seems to me pretty standard as far as baby treatment goes.  Anyone who says different needs to lighten up.

Oh my goodness Nick. Maybe I’ve misunderstood you. I realize that she wasn’t treating these babies as badly as she could have, but she certainly did not treat them correctly and has NO business being a nanny. I thought these were dolls at first! This treatment is unacceptable. I wouldn’t treat my dogs this carelessly and woe to anyone I caught mistreating my dogs, much less my children, if I had any.

Those babies could have at any time been seriously injured had they fallen off the couch. You just don’t leave a baby so precariously unattended. And to hold a baby upside down is not good for the baby. It would give me a headache to be forced to lay upside down for more than a minute.

I didn’t read the article, but I would probably be just as outraged as you seem to suggest this author was.

Dawn,

I don’t think you’ve misunderstood me. I don’t think that anything this nanny did was outside the realm of what parents of infants do every day.

I know when my daughter was an infant we’d leave her on the couch for extended periods of time. She was just fine, always within ear range. And even if the baby did fall off the couch in the video (as all babies do at some point or another), it’s doubtful that there would have been any serious injury. God makes babies pretty well, they don’t break all that easily. ;)

I’d also mention that the nanny was less than 10 ft. away in the kitchen and she would have certainly heard any cries and been able to attend to the babies so that wasn’t really an issue for me either.

And the baby wasn’t really upside down. She was kind of on a sloped angle, but nevertheless, secure in the hand and on the lap of the nanny. Plus it didn’t look like anywhere near a minute from the footage. Again, this is nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, it’s rather tame. I hold my nephew (who’s 1 now) upside down all the time. And what’s more, I throw him clear across the room onto the bed and have been doing so since he was 3 mo. old. He loves it!!! Never does he cry, never has he been hurt from it. This is the stuff that makes having kids fun. :)

What a nose picker! Gosh! Even so, I can see why she was let go, but turning in the video to the Police? Now that’s rough! I think too the video would be good for use in babysitting certification classes as to how not to treat babies! Yes, there are such things as babysitting certification classes and that lady should think about going to one.

Sure Brian, after she gets out of prison!
